Between 14 and 16 February, 2013, 25 students between the ages of 16 and 20 joined the ESU Malta team of tutors for the first ever national Public Speaking Academy. The scope of the Academy was to encourage young people to believe in themselves, while working hard to acquire the skills needed to communicate their opinions and ideas to others when speaking in public.
Dr Michael Frendo, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta, Nathan Farrugia, CEO of Inspire as well as master athlete, Bernie Mizzi, Principal of St Martin’s School and Pro-Chancellor of University of Malta, as well as Marie Briguglio, Lecturer at the University of Malta and screen writer, addressed the plenary, inspiring the participants through their personal life stories while sharing tips on how to speak and present effectively.
‘This experience has pushed me outside my comfort zone and, knowing that I succeeded to speak in front of such a large group, gives me a great sense of satisfaction,” one Sixth Form student commented. A University student remarked: “I never imagined I could persuade others to listen to me in this way. I feel empowered by this experience and cannot wait for the Debating Academy!”
“Watching participants face their fears and work hard to embark on a journey of growth was a memorable experience,” commented Yvette Micallef and Giuliana Fenech, ESU Malta’s tutors at the Academy. Yvette and Giuliana were supported during the Academy by Toastmasters members, who helped give participants individual attention on their speeches.
Applications to the Debating Academy, to be held between 18 and 20 April, 2013, can be found. Entry to this Academy is subject to limited places, so early booking is recommended. For further information contact ESU Malta on: firstname.lastname@example.org.
