ALLURA – Malta Open Art Studios is making an open call for artists working in photographic and digital art, painting, sculpture, illustration, printmaking, design, and multidisciplinary and performance art to participate in The Trail, on the 27th and 28th October 2018.

The deadline for applications is Friday, 1st June

The Trail is a walking tour of open artists’ studios that will be taking place across multiple venues across St Julian’s and Sliema and will be free of charge to the visiting public.

This high profile open studio event will allow artists to share their work and creative processes by connecting them in person to a wider audience of residents and visitors from all walks of life.

Unlike a gallery exhibition, the open studio experience is about sharing the pleasure and excitement of the making process itself. It’s informal, so people can relax and enjoy meeting the artist and talking about their work, it is also an opportunity to network, collaborate or sell, just like an art fair or exhibition.

The Trail will be widely publicised to visitors through the Malta Tourism Authority, and locally through TV and media. It is an event worth working towards for the exposure and opportunities it can afford.

The Trail is a walking tour of open artists’ studios. In total between 20 and 30 venues will be taking part; hosting a single artist or an entire group. Artists within The Trail area are invited to open up their workspace to the public or be accommodated at pre-selected ‘host venues’ along with artists from outside areas. The idea is for the artist to share their process in whichever way feels most natural. This can be done by working on an unfinished piece of work during the event, demonstrating techniques or equipment, or setting up workshops or activities, so people can try out the artists’ methods or style. The organisers want everyone involved to have an enjoyable and creative experience.

Similar trails have been running for some time overseas. The Whiteknights Studio Trail in the UK is now in its 17th year and is Allura’s international partner for this event.
