Base series – Foundation
“What foundation is best for me?” Is one of the most asked questions I get from clients. The truth is there is no one fits all answer because our skin is so different and needs personalised recommendations. The best way to know if a foundation is going to work for you is by trying it out for a day or two. I know, the times we are in have resulted in many stores putting a stop to sampling so I’ve done my best to recommend some foundations according to skin types and different coverage below.
Coverage – the coverage of your foundation can go from light to full depending on how much of your natural skin you want to be seen… I personally prefer light to medium coverage because you can add more coverage with concealer if needs be and sometimes a full cover can be very mask-like if not applied correctly… however a lot of people love full coverage and can also look amazing too when applied correctly.
If you have skin issues you prefer to cover or just love an opaque finish on your skin, then a full-coverage formula is for you.
You can’t go wrong with the Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation, a classic in its own right! My favourite thing about it is the lightweight formula! It doesn’t seem like full coverage to touch but applied in a thin layer will give a beautiful full cover that lasts all day!
Medium to full coverage
The IT Cosmetics CC Cream is a great all-rounder for different skin types if you like medium to full coverage, it also comes in an oil-free formula. It has amazing coverage without looking heavy and many skin benefits to boot! Sometimes I even use it as a concealer under the eyes and around the nose.
Light to medium coverage
I’m a huge fan of a good tinted moisturiser, ESPECIALLY the Laura Mercier one! It’s hard to beat and comes in different formulations for skin type and the option of SPF. The reason I love this one because it gives a beautiful veil-like coverage that’s very easy to build on so you can quickly put it on for everyday convenience or build up to a beautiful coverage by adding concealers and highlighter in the right places!
Do you like a glow? A bit of a bright, I’ve made a little effort kind of look?
When it comes to sheer coverage, my recommendation is to use a product that you can mix with your moisturiser or a face tan! This way, if you use a fake tanner, you’ve a few days of waking up with a glow and no hassle! Or, if you use mixing drops in your moisturiser, it’s not really an extra step and something you can probably do with your eyes closed!
- less is more… always leave room to build
- A good brush or sponge can be your best friend
- When colour matching, look at your overall colour not just your face as we can be a lot lighter in time on the face.
- Use the correct undertone, whether you are cool or warm or even neutral, the wrong undertone can look very obvious and unflattering.
