Fish leather tiles – now available!

fish scale tilesDecorum Est, the rare decorative surfaces specialist, has pioneered an innovative new tile collection made from the skins of salmon, perch, wolf fish and cod; the first time fish leather has been used in this way in the industry.

Under the creative direction of their skilled master craftsmen, Decorum Est has intricately overlaid these four unusual and luxurious leathers onto substrates to achieve an astonishing textured finish for walls, floors and furniture. The collection sees these leathers combined with other luxurious materials, like vellum (or calf skin), to create unique and contrasting patterns.

Fish leather, widely used in haute couture as a finish for accessories, is strong, thin and flexible making it a hugely diverse material. It can be coloured at source to create truly unique hues and textures that allow the customer complete control over the finished product. The material used in the collection, a by-product of the fisheries industry, is produced by a tannery in Iceland that uses raw materials that would otherwise be discarded ensuring there is no harm to the local ecosystem.

The texture and appearance of fish leather varies depending on the species of fish although its natural cross-fibre structure renders it remarkably tear resistant. Salmon is thin, smooth and refined making it the most versatile fish leather for colouring. Perch has a thick and rough texture that, when combined with metallic finishes, boasts an intense and bold pattern that really stands out. The scaleless wolffish, the darkest of the leathers, has the smoothest texture and a striking spotted pattern that gives it such a distinctive look. Cod leather is thin and supple, yet very strong. It has a highly unusual combination of rough and smooth textures that makes it such a vibrant and unpredictable material.

Decorum Est’s flagship store is located at 568 King’s Road, London.

The Ocean Leather Collection is priced from: £500 per m2
