HSBC Malta supports tree planting in Għargħur

imageMore than 40 trees indigenous to Malta were planted at Għargħur Battery at Tal-Ferħa in a team effort involving Għargħur Primary school students, Għargħur Local Council, and volunteers from HSBC Malta. The event, supported by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Culture Hon. José Herrera, HSBC Malta Head of Business Management Matt Macdona, and Għargħur Mayor Mario Gauci, marked 20 years since the founding of Local Councils in Malta.

Hon. José Herrera said: “In order to mark this special occassion we are celebrating it through the inception of a new life. I truly hope that further to the work carried out over the past twenty years, the concept of local government broadens its remit in the near future and becomes a firmer institution closer to our communities. We are currently working in order to evolve the concept of devolution to give more regional authority which is helping our councils to evolve their own identities ”

“It’s great to see students, the Local Council and HSBC Malta employees cooperating so well in the name of environmental sustainability,” said HSBC Malta Head of Business Management Matt Macdona. “Tree planting efforts such as this are very effective. In one swoop, this activity promotes environmental awareness and appreciation for nature, encourages students and adults alike to be more active members of society, while also strengthening the ecosystem and making this scenic area all the more beautiful.”

On behalf of Għargħur Local Council, the Mayor thanked all participants for their hard work. “This team effort shows the effectiveness of voluntary work as a drive towards greater sustainability,” said Mr Gauci. “Special thanks goes to HSBC Malta employees for all the voluntary work put throughout the year to enhance and protect this area of special historical and environmental importance.”
