Inspired by the theme ‘Infectious’, a group of 13 Fine Art students reading for a highernational diploma at MCAST Institute of Art & Design, will be interacting and communicating a unique relationship between the scientific and artistic world with the public. Their artworks will be exhibited at the Auberge d’Italie in Merchants Street, Valletta as part of the Science and the City on Friday 27 September 2013 and promises to be very infectious.

The product of the students’ research and design is the result of months working on making edible flies, giant mosquitos, sculptures, paintings and other stunning art installations as part of their course assignment “Project Design Implementation and Evaluation”. They wereinspired and led by Dr Edward Duca and Ms Ruth Ancilleri.

The works highlight the spread of bacteria and infections. The artworks are by Raymond Axiaq, Aaron Bezzina, Pamela Bezzina, Maria Borg, Nathalie Debono, Sarah Doublet, Lisa Formosa, Christa Gerada, Maria Isabella Grech, Christian Micallef, Andrew Portelli, Ezekiel Vassallo, and Alberto Zagami. MCAST would like to thank Dr Mario Valentino, the Ministry of Tourism and Katya Micallef at Heritage Malta.

The exhibition will be open during Science in the City and will run between the 9th and the 30th of September at the Auberge d’Italie.

As part of the pan-European event called Researchers’ Night, Science in the City is running over 25 events for all — families, young people, and adults alike, on the 27th September from 6.00pm onwards. The festival aims to encourage young people to build on Malta’s cultural legacy and to develop the scientific skills and confidence to create better lives and better future.

The activities are coordinated by the Research Trust of the University of Malta (RIDT), and the Malta Chamber of Scientists in partnership with the Valletta Local Council, MEUSAC, the Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sports, European Commission Representation in Malta, MCST, Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, Where’s Everybody, Malta Chamber of Pharmacists, PBS, Notte Bianca, iCreatemotion, Vodafone, Valletta 2018 Foundation, Microsoft Innovation Centre and St James Cavalier.
