Most of us make some sort of new year goal or resolution. January does this to us, makes us want to start fresh or re-invent, de-clutter.
Has anyone been watching Marie Kondo on Netflix? I watched a couple of episodes but have the book a few years and seen as it has gotten lots of people clearing out the old, it got me thinking of how we tend to neglect our makeup and brushes and hoard what we don’t need, well beyond expiry – yes, makeup expires pals!
Makeup can be a haven for bacteria, given the nature of its moist condition so liquids and cream products such as foundations and lipsticks may only last you 6-18 months. Always check the little open tub symbol on a product, it will give you the amount of time to expire once opened.
A huge give away is also a kind of iffy smell.
Powders tend to last a lot longer as they don’t harbour as much bacteria, however, oil build up from your skin and dipping brushes back and forth cause a hard sealed effect which is not nice.
Mascara should be dumped, ideally after 3 months and your brushes should be washed once a week.
To prolong your makeup from getting mucky, there are many sprays you can buy such as “beauty so clean” that will disinfect products(i personally have a littke spray bottle of surgical spirits… quick to evaporate) and also simply not keeping your makeup bag in the bathroom is a great idea as the steam in there as well as what we do in there spreads in the air and also on to your makeup.
So if you want to have a good clear out or clean, dump all your makeup out on to towel, go through your stash and firstly check the expiry and secondly, question wether you still actually use it.
You will feel great and have an excuse to get some new goodies!!
