Let’s Talk About Spf

UVA, UVB, broad spectrum, physical block, chemical block…. do all these terms sound familiar but still confuse the life out of you?
Me too!
Just when I think I’ve got sun protection all figured out, a new study will come out to contradict another and I’m back to the drawing board of trying to figure out what’s safest for my skin

All I know for sure is that, we need to be protecting our skin every sday from the harmful affects of the sun.

My skin is not very sensitive nor difficult, however, I have typical Celtic skin that is sun intolerant and will burn and freckle even through a windscreen, even with very high sun protection, I mightn’t get burnt but I guarantee you my freckles will re-produce.
I embrace this about my skin but as I am getting older, instead of cute little freckles, I am at risk of deeper more intense forms of pigmentation that manifests in areas of the skin in the form of dark or light discoloration. This goes for all skin types.

The problem I have with spf though, is the majority that I have found good, break me out, break down my makeup, feel like I’m wearing a mask…. I hate wearing it if I’m honest but I know I can’t afford not to.

Step in AVENE!
I had always heard about the brand but it wasn’t always easily available, I first tried out their eau thermal water when I was on honeymoon in Florence because my skin became swollen with the heat. Anytime I felt over heated, i’d spray it on my face and feet for an instant cool down and refresh. Now I always use this product, even after my makeup.

Ever the French skin care brand enthusiast, this brand has become a firm favourite for spf and here’s why:

1. I have been using the tinted cream spf 50 everyday for a week and no break outs! I’ve also been using the reflexe solaire spf 50 since going on a sun holiday in May. They are both light weight and fast absorbing, work beautiful on their own and under your makeup… I’m loving the tinted cream on it’s own, so quick and easy in the morning and my mind is at rest knowing my skin is protected.
2.  No sun burn… the ultimate test was last week when I was working on a photo shoot all day in the hot Gozo sun.
3.  No white Marks
4.  Non greasy
5.  Provides broad spectrum protection

Avène is now sold in most pharmacies in Malta and if you go in and ask about the product, they will break down what you need, like a prescription personalised for your skin type,

The ladies on their Facebook page are also super helpful.

Another highly recommended brand from me, I look forward to trying more of their line and keeping you all posted!

The eau thermal spring water is already a staple in my makeup kit and I’m very picky about what makes the cut to use on clients!
