MPO Principal Conductor Brian Schembri returns with the MPO to conduct a magical programme with repertoire from the Classical era, featuring two of the prime exponents of the period – Mozart and Beethoven, on Friday 30thMay at 20:00 hrs with a repeat performance on Saturday 31st May.
This evening showcases two of Mozart’s and one of Beethoven’s most popular and loved works. Mozart’s overture to The Magic Flute which, as often happened with many composers, was finished a few days before the premiere in 1782. This is followed by another of Mozart’s great works, the clarinet concerto in A, which was completed just two days before the premiere of the Magic Flute! The concerto, which remains one of the most exquisite compositions of all time, features clarinettist Godfrey Mifsud as the soloist, considered to be one of Malta’s most refined solo and chamber musicians.
The evening rounds off in dramatic style with Beethoven’s fifth symphony in C minor, which has one of the most famous opening bars equally know to the classical die-hards and the less uninitiated. Of the opening notes Beethoven is reputed to have said “Thus Fate knocks at the door”. Fate knocks it is true but he is not overwhelmed by it, as the work reveals.
More than just a concert, Magical Classics is an exquisite evening of music showcasing exquisite refined melodies and unmistakable passionate tones. A pre-concert talk is open to all ticket holders, starting at 19:15 hrs. For bookings please call 21246389 or visitwww.teatrumanoel.com.mt.
