Marisa Attard, artist and Illustrator

Follow the Leader by Marisa Attard

I am an illustrator and an artist. My illustrations can be found mostly in children’s books. My recent paintings are mixed media – acrylic and collage. The subject is mainly people and my style is quirky, humorous, satirical and sometimes dark (feel free to visit my website and facebook page).

How did you get started?
I started working as a book illustrator after volunteering to illustrate a number of early readers for a series of books published by the Parents Foundation for Education in collaboration with San Anton School. My painting started in earnest after attending evening life classes with Anton Calleja just over 20 years ago.

Whose artist’s work are you most inspired by?
Quentin Blake, Ralph Steadman, Tim Burton, Edward Gorey, Egon Schiele, the list goes on…

Describe your work in less than 10 words.
Humorous, quirky, tongue in cheek, colourful, textured.

What genre do you consider your work to be?
Over the years I have done landscape paintings, figurative and nudes. Today I would say that my art is mostly humorous and also satirical at times.

Your favourite from among your own artworks?
Difficult to choose. One of my recent favourites is a mixed media painting entitled “Blow”.

Where was your first exhibition held?
My first solo exhibition took place at Muska Gallery in Balzan in 2005.

What are you working on at the moment?
Besides commissions for book illustrations I am also working on humorous mixed media paintings for a couple of collective exhibitions being held later on this year and next Spring.

How long have you been painting?
I always loved art and painting but started taking it seriously and exhibiting my work when I began attending art classes with Anton Calleja about 20 years ago.

Are you a morning person or do you come alive at night?
Both. I tend to slow down in the afternoons.

How many coffees a day? Don’t embellish.
3 more or less.

Sundays can be very productive for some and very unproductive for others. How do you spend yours?
It depends what plans I have – if I’m free and at home I will be happy up in my studio painting and sketching.
