The Teatru Manoel BOV Performing Arts Festival continues with the World renowned MNOZIL Brass Band who will perform for the first time in Malta at Teatru Manoel on Friday 3rd May at 8pm. This is a brass band like no other and is made up of seven insane-cool brass players (their description).
MNOZIL, incidentally, is the name of the inn across the road from the music conservatory in Vienna where the musicians met regularly and where they established the band in 1996. They started performing in Austria, then Switzerland and Germany and now tour all over the world giving about 120 concerts a year. They have performed at the Musikverein Wien, the KKL Luzern, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Ruhr Triennale, the Salzburg Festival and the Burgtheater Vienna amongst others. The ensemble has also released 7 CDs and 4 DVDs.
At the start they never planned to give concerts and played together purely for their own pleasure, unselfconsciously and with complete freedom which gave them plenty of time to develop the special style they have today. Their aim is to retain and pass on to others their pleasure in making music.
They play classical, jazz and other styles of music using traditional brass instruments and more unusual instruments such as the keyed trumpet and Wagner tuba. Music is presented with a typical Austrian style of humour, which can be approximately characterized as “jet black” and “here and there” absurd. Elements of slapstick exist next to virtuosic brass playing.
