Carmen Gatt Baldacchino has been elected as the new President of the Friends of the Manoel. Set up in 1986, the aim of this non-profit association is to support Teatru Manoel in building its audience and encouraging local talent in the pursuit of the theatrical arts and broadening the repertoire.
“Since its inception, the Friends of the Manoel have been supporting the Theatre in various ways, including promoting its events and raising funds for various causes which recently have included the purchase of a Grand Piano, fire proof curtains for the stage as well as sponsorship of events,” said Mrs Gatt Baldacchino. “We encourage theatre lovers to join us to contribute further in ensuring our national theatre continues to be the treasure it is.”
The association organises monthly activities during the theatre season, including vocal and instrumental concerts with established performers and new talents, talks about composers and their music, educational tours and cultural and social activities, including an annual summer BBQ and Christmas dinner.
Mrs Gatt Baldacchino has been a member of the Friends’ committee since 2001, coordinating activities. She became vice president in 2006. Currently, the association embraces some 200 members.
The other members of the committee are Johann Tisch – vice-president; Cecilia Xuereb – secretary; Charles Falzon – treasurer and members Margaret Tisch, Doris Camilleri and Silke Schermann.
