Witness the infamous Montague and Capulet rivalry, based on William Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers.
The balletic portrayal of the infamous play first premiered in 1940 as Sergei Prokofiev’s production graced the Kirov stage, with Bolshoi to follow a mere four years later.
Yuri Grigorovich revived the original production in 1978, and today brings to stage a choreographic version based on this rendition – originally prepared for the Paris Opera. An abstract, generalised version of Shakespeare’s story see’s Grigorovich draw on personal memories to fill the characters with life. Magnificent scenic and costume design by Simon Virsaladze, and lighting design by Mikhail Sokolov add to the perfection of this execution.
