The MADC One-Act Play Festival turns 40

This year’s Edition of the MADC One-Act Play Festival will take place from 6 to 9 September, 2018 at the MADC Playhouse in Sta. Venera

The MADC first introduced a One-Act Play Festival for aspiring actors and directors in 1979 – making this year’s edition their 40th. Staged at the club’s intimate Playhouse, the ‘One-Acts’ as they are popularly known, have now become a staple of the club’s, and indeed Malta’s, annual theatrical calendar. Since its early stages, the festival has provided a spring-board for many who are now considered to be some of Malta’s top actors and directors.

Early editions also aimed to give those backstage crew members who wished to do so the opportunity to experience first-hand the pressures of actually facing an audience by taking on an acting role. While the Festival remains an opportunity for all, it has also developed a following among local talent-spotters and audiences alike, who take a keen interest in the five plays as well as who the winners of the awards on offer will be.

Forever looking ahead, the MADC’s Fortieth Festival will see a new collaboration with Malta’s recently established national theatre company, Teatru Malta. Following the launch of a Scriptwriting Competition, the five best plays selected from this competition are currently being rehearsed by the club’s budding actors and directors. Their efforts will culminate in what promises to be an interesting and innovative festival from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th September, with awards presented on the final night.
