In my ongoing quest to find new distractions from the everyday activities and further subject my body to masochistic experiences, I played paintball for the first time. I’m quite clumsy by nature so I didn’t expect to suddenly go Rambo-mode on my friends, shooting everything in sight, including some of my own team mates. When power goes to my head, I tend to get a little carried away.
Thankfully for my team, our opponents decided I was too much of a liability to be kept in the game so although I felt invincible that didn’t keep me from getting shot quite early on. I left the building sticky, tired, a little sore, but with a new appreciation for paintball. Behind the reputation of being a pastime for hicks and rednecks like four-wheeling and cow tipping, there’s a fun and thrilling game with a surprisingly undercurrent of intellect and strategy. It’s far from the finger twitching experience for hyperactive drones one would expect.
The 5 things I learned while playing paintball were:
1. You can play with little or no experience
2. You are going to get shot – Deal with it
3. Practice is important, but communication is essential – That initial warm up period is when you figure out what direction you are going to go and what your plan is. But it is also when you really need to discuss with your teammates what everyone’s plan is and how you are going to coordinate your efforts.
4. The game should be fun!
5. I bruise easily
Anyhow, the best thing is to have a team of at least 10 people in order to have a really good experience of the game. Equipment is provided on site and rules are read out loud by the umpire. The Paintball Malta team suggests that the most important thing to bring is your sense of humor. I loved it and will definitely be trying again if my friends forgive me for the last encounter. I guess it’s time to put my persuasive skills to work!
