Every body is a “beach body”, which means anyone can where whatever they like under our hot Mediterranean sun! For this feature, we’re zoning in on the classic black swimming costume, which is a go-to favourite for all figures and ages.
Black is known to be slimming, but we love the fact that a great one-piece can be curve accentuating too. There really is a style to suit every figure, and the black cossie has been a go-to option for celebrities throughout the years. It’s one of the most timeless wardrobe staples of them all, and whilst it’s not the flashiest swimwear option, it’s certainly one of the chicest.
This summer, Indulge takes a look back at some of our favourites over the years for inspiration. We’ll definitely be digging out our old faithfuls this season, paired with a wide-brimmed hat and oversized sunglasses for extra coastal sophistication. Just don’t forget the Ambre Solaire!
1. Princess Diana, 1993

Princess Diana was very active and loved swimming and water sports. Pictured here in the Caribbean with a surfboard and shades in 1993, her swimming costume is as modest as it gets, yet it screams athletic cool.
2. Kim Kardashian, 2016

Kim Kardashion takes the plunge in this cleavage-enhancing one piece back in 2016. The deep V halterneck style gives the illusion of an even narrower waist to give that hourglass shape the reality star is known for.
3. Naomi Campbell, 1992

Naomi Campbell was a Versace muse, and embodied the label’s look in the early nineties. Black and gold were a go-to colour combination for the beloved designer, and this strappy number from 1992 was way ahead of its time- it looks modern today!
4. Claudia Schiffer, 1989

Taken in Palm Beach just over thirty years ago, Claudia Sciffer demonstrates just how timeless a black swimming costume can be in this 1989 poolside snap. This scalloped number hasn’t aged a day, and the supermodel herself still looks incredible too!
5. Kourtney Kardashian, 2016

Another Kardashian sister and this time it’s Kourtney. It seems the siblings have sussed the powers of a fabulous, flattering black swimsuit! When shopping around, look out for interesting details and cuts like this studded one-shouldered piece from 2016.
6. Sophia Loren, 1965
In the 1960s, Sophia Loren was decidedly curvier than the Twiggy-esque models of the time, but this didn’t bother her. Pictured here beaming in 1965, the actress lives by her words “I’d rather eat pasta and drink wine than be a size zero”.
