Think before you snap – Photography Exhibition

Il-Futur Qarib “Erbatax-il ħsieb” or “14 thoughts” is an exhibition by Reuben Chircop, at the Center for National Culture in Mosta, between the 3rd and the 16th of February.

This exhibition is a continuation of the search towards the essence of thought and how it changes from one medium to another ending up as a metaphorical image.  In past exhibitions, photographs wrapped around these thoughts, thus hiding the essence or inception of the thought itself.

“This time I wanted to expose the spark and attach it to the translated image.  Each one of these thoughts is an experience, personal or shared with me by people whom I meet everyday,” says Reuben. ” The trigger comes from either a thought, an occurrence, a mood or simply hearing peoples’ experiences.  For some time now I have been visiting local markets and whilst making my way through, I listen to people talk, sharing their days’ torments, their present lives, their problems or concerns.  In turn this sparks an inner process which serves as fuel for my thought process.

Il-ħsieb ħaffiefFrom there I just start to write notes and create a sort of matrix of ideas which ultimately are translated into an image.  I use photography as a medium to translate these thoughts into something visual.  The process is usually automatic, it could be just one word or even a scent or an occurrence to trigger this whole process to fire up instantly.”

Reuben’s aim in this exhibition is to expose the initial thoughts, before actually creating the image itself and expose them through each of the 14 photographs. Some of the images used in this exhibition can be found on  www.rchircop.com
