I have had a love affair with edible flowers since getting Francis Bissell’s ‘Scented Kitchen‘ as a gift. Since then I have foraged for and picked flowers, herbs and leaves; participated in workshops and practiced at every opportunity. However, I did once end up at A&E having mistaken a non edible plant as an ingredient for brunch, so please do be careful and be absolutely sure the plant you pick is the one you can eat.
There are occasional walks that will highlight the most common safe and dangerous plants, and today, Duo, an Qawra-based restaurant hosted a demo and tasting at a garden centre.
Not all flowers have much flavour; rose petals and nasturtium are exceptions that are easily found locally. Duo presented some mini cheese pies, pork towers, a beautiful looking salad, flower power iced-pops, stuffed zucchini flowers, a risotto and a chocolate mousse. The latter prepared in minature teracotta flower pots and decorated with pansies.
I had never heard of Duo before, so will pay a visit in the not too distant future, and hope they have some of the same items on their menu.
